Hanalei Bay
Just minutes from Princeville, Hanalei Bay is one of Kauai’s most recognizable beaches and best-known surfing destinations.
The nearly two-mile crescent-shaped bay offers several surf breaks, with conditions varying dramatically by location, swell and season. Smaller summer waves can make portions of the bay approachable for newer surfers, while winter swells can produce powerful conditions suited only for experienced surfers.
Even if you don’t plan to paddle out, Hanalei Bay is a beautiful place to watch local surfers, spend the day on the beach and experience Kauai’s surf culture.
Surfing Kauai’s South Shore
Staying in Poipu or elsewhere on Kauai’s South Shore? You’ll have plenty of opportunities to surf here, too.
While winter is known for big North Shore waves, summer is South Shore surf season. Swells generated in the Southern Hemisphere travel across the Pacific and reach Kauai’s south-facing coastline, bringing more consistent surf from approximately May through October.
The Poipu area has a mix of beginner-friendly areas and more challenging reef breaks, making it a popular destination for surfers of different experience levels.
Poipu & Kiahuna Beach
Poipu is one of the most convenient areas for visitors who want to try surfing on Kauai’s South Shore.
Kiahuna Beach, located in the Poipu area, is a popular location for beginner surf lessons when conditions are appropriate. Its more approachable inside waves can give new surfers an opportunity to practice paddling, standing and catching their first waves, while breaks farther offshore provide options for more experienced surfers.
You’ll also find surfboard rentals and professional surf lessons nearby, making it easy to add a morning of surfing to your South Shore vacation.
Poipu is also a great choice for families with different interests. While one member of the family heads out for a surf lesson, everyone else can enjoy the area’s beaches, snorkeling, restaurants and beautiful South Shore sunshine.
North Shore or South Shore: Where Should You Surf?
One of the great things about surfing on Kauai is that conditions change throughout the year.
Winter — approximately November through April: North Pacific storms send larger swells toward Kauai’s North and West Shores. The North Shore can produce spectacular waves during this time, but many breaks may be appropriate only for highly experienced surfers.
Summer — approximately May through October: The North Shore generally becomes calmer while south swells bring more consistent waves to Poipu and other areas along Kauai’s South Shore.
Spring and fall are transitional periods, and conditions can vary significantly from one day to the next.
Rather than choosing a surf spot based solely on the season, always check current conditions before heading out.
Learn to Surf on Kauai

Professional surf lessons are available on both the North Shore around Hanalei and the South Shore around Poipu.
