Makana Terrace is a sophisticated casual dining experience overlooking beautiful Hanalei Bay and Makana Mountain (Bali Hai). The Kauai Grill experience is a comfortable yet elegant restaurant with stunning views of Hanalei Bay and Bali Hai. Nanea Restaurant and Bar is located at 3838 Wyllie Rd in the Westin Princeville resort. Enjoy a casual elegant dining experience overlooking the pools at the resort. The menu features beautiful dishes made from fresh, local and unique ingredients. Monday through Saturday they serve breakfast from 7:00 – 10:30am, lunch from 11:00am – 2:30pm and dinner from 6:00 – 9:30pm. Dinner service is available on Sunday from 6:00 – 9:30pm. The St. Regis Bar has a cool scene with breathtaking views of Hanalei Bay and Bali Hai. Enjoy a cocktail or a sumptuous dish handcrafted by their Culinary Chefs. There’s nightly entertainment featuring the distinctive sounds of local artists. Monday through Sunday beverage service is available from 3:30 – 11:00pm and dinner from 5:30 – 10:00pm. Happy Talk Lounge is located at 5380 Honoiki Rd. in the Hanalei Bay Resort. It’s a sweet bar scene with amazing views, a friendly staff and amazing service. They serve American cuisine (upscale bar food) and have a full bar, they boast 16 select 29 degree beers on tap. They’re open daily from 11:30am – 9:00pm where you can also enjoy nightly entertainment and watch your favorite sports on 9 TV screens. They offer takeout, outdoor seating, valet parking and are family friendly. $$ – $$$

Federico’s Mexican restaurant and located at 5-4280 Kuhio Highway in the Princeville Shopping Center. With friendly service, they serve up traditional fare as well as super tasty fresh fish tacos. Federico’s is either takeout or shared seating with a couple of other places and is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00am – 8:30pm. They offer takeout, outdoor seating, plenty of parking and is super for families with keiki (children). If you’re on a budget, this is an easy option. $

Lotus Garden Chinese and Thai Cuisine serves up Asian, Thai and Chinese food that’s fast and reasonably priced. They’re located at 5-4280 Kuhio Highway in the Princeville Shopping Center and share a comfortable outdoor seating area. Please note, spicy means SPICY on their menu, but they will customize orders for you…order at the counter and they’ll bring the food to your table. They offer takeout, delivery, ample parking and are family and kid friendly. $

Tiki Iniki opened in the Princeville Shopping Center at 5-4280 Kuhio Highway in 2013. It was brought to life by Michele Rundgren, wife of famed music man Todd Rundgren.  It’s a kitchy island style restaurant and bar serving up American, Polynesian, Hawaiian, Fusion and Gluten free option cuisines. It’s a fun filled atmosphere and the service is snappy. They’re open daily from 11:30am – 12:00am serving breakfast, lunch and dinner along with handcrafted vintage Hawaiian and Tiki cocktails. Of course there’s a full bar as well. They offer takeout, outdoor seating, easy parking, television and are family friendly. $$ – $$$

Lighter Fare

Sandwich Isle Deli just opened 4 months ago in the Princeville Shopping Center. They make great sandwiches like The Surfer, The Beach and The Makai as well as the tradtional deli ham, turkey,  roast beef, pastrami and Philly cheese steak.  They use only the freshest ingredients, Boar’s Head meats and organic breads baked on the island. Sandwich Isle Deli has outdoor seating on a covered lanai and they’re open Monday through Friday from 8:00am – 3:00pm and Saturday from 11:00am – 3:00pm.

Lappert’s Ice Cream & Coffee Shop gets rave reviews from most visitors to this small shop in the Princeville Shopping Center. Their premium ice cream is handmade and they make their own waffle cones, selection of flavors include a wonderful Kona Coffee, fresh coconut and the popular Kaua‘i Pie…you have to try it to appreciate it. Lappert’s is open daily from 10:00am – 9:00pm, they also serve up sorbet, gourmet coffees and cookies.

KILAUEA

Kong Lung Historic Market Center

Kong Lung Historic Market Center, will take you back in time, when sugarcane was the staple way of life and everyone had to work together to harvest the farms. Plantation days are long gone, but you a sense of what it was like when you visit Kong Lung Market. Today, Kong Lung Market host many unique boutique shops, gift shops, an art gallery and the famous Kilauea bakery.

To get to Kong Lung Market, head north on HI-56 N road until you reach the Menehune Food Mart (Shell Gas Station). Make a right on Kolo Road, then a left on Kilauea road. Stay on Kilauea road until you reach Keneke Street on your right side. You will see a building right after Keneke Street with red dragon flags facing you. Park where there is space. The parking is made for compact cars so find a safe place to park and slowly open your doors.

As you walk around you will begin to smell the fresh aroma of sweet pastries and pizza from the Kilauea Bakery and Pau Hana Pizza shop. You walk into their plantation style building and is welcomed by smiling local faces and a large selection of bake goods. After you get your bake espresso and lilikoi treat, feel free to roam around the Market.

Next to the Kilauea Bakery is the Island Soap & Candle Shop that started off small with just handmade soaps back in 1984. Now has expanded to shops of unique island fragrance soaps and candles that infuse fruits like guava, and passion fruit. Be prepared to bring your credit card, you might find yourself wanting buy a handful of candles and soaps as gifts for your love ones. They are so unique; you can’t help but smell them all and ask the staff to wrap it up. They also have workshops during the week, where you can learn how to make your own candle or soap bar. If you are into Tori Richard shirts and Art, you might want to check out Kong Lung Trading. They have an array of designer home décor, apparel and jewelry. A great place to find a high-end souvenir you can wear to work or showoff at home. Or if you want one of a kind art ceramic plates or cups for your home, head down to Banana Patch Studio. The owner and Artist Joanna Carolan hand paints her Hawaiian tropical vision onto many home pieces and has been doing so for over 20 years. Her art is unique. One of her plates has koi fishes and banana leaves infused into one art. Instead of the typical fine china you find at friend’s homes, you might want to purchase a ceramic plate from her. It’s a great conversation piece.

Kong Lung Historic Market Center has something for everyone. They even have sculptures for kids to admire while eating ice-cream on hot summer day. This is a very great way to go back in time and get a feel of what plantation days use to be like. It doesn’t hurt to walk around and shop a bit too before checking out the Kilauea lighthouse.


Kilauea Bakery & Pau Hana Pizza

Kilauea Bakery & Pau Hana Pizza, will help you satisfy your sweet tooth and your pizza craving. It is a unique bakery that is eco-friendly, only serving with biodegradable utensils and cups. You may find it in the heart of Kong Lung Market Center, in Kilauea. They are open daily from 6am thru 9pm.

To find this eclectic bakery, take a drive on HI-56 N, and turn right on Kilauea Rd to Keneke St. There you will see the Kong Lung Market Center, with their dragon flags. Find parking and follow the pizza aroma to the bakery.

The best time to get your fresh bake goods on is any time before 10am. After 10am, they are sold out. People come from all over the island just to get a taste of their bake goods. They got scones, assorted muffins, and fresh coconut, lilikoi or guava pastries. If you want to try something new for breakfast, try their scrambled egg Stromboli. One of their signature desserts is the Haupia filled chocolate éclairs. One bite and it will lead you to chocolate coconut heaven.

For pizza lovers, you might want to try the “Pesto Mystic.” It is made with fresh basil pesto, mushroom, roasted onion and mozzarella cheese. HANALEI

Dolphin Fish Market & Sushi

Dolphin Fish Market, in Hanalei is a one stop shop for fish lovers. It has a restaurant, fish market and sushi lounge all in one. A private chef’s dream of ordering fresh marlin or Ahi (tuna) for his or her clients is possible here at Dolphin Fish Market. This Market is also located in Poipu and has been a local favorite since 1970.

Drive your way to Hanalei by driving on HI-56 N. Stay on HI-56 North until you reach HI-560 West. Like Dora from the Disney movie says: “Just keep swimming.” In this case, just keep driving. Keep driving until you reach Hanalei town’s entrance. Dolphin Fish Market will be on your right side. You can’t miss it, the blue marlin on a poll, will greet you in the front of the restaurant.

Enjoy an array of gourmet lunch dishes and or dinner specials inside or on their lanai. Bar Acuda is an open-air restaurant with an intimate/local scene feel. They’re located at 5-5161 Kuhio Highway  in the heart of Hanalei, and are open Monday through Sunday from 5:30 – 9:30pm. This is tapas style dining with small dishes, so order many for the table and share away.  Bar Acuda is “outstanding”, has “excellent service” and has received an “A+” for ambience. Postcards Cafe is housed in a charming 1800’s plantation cottage with an old-style Hawaii feel. Fresh organic ingredients make up their fish, vegetarian, vegan dishes and one of a kind desserts. Kalypso Island Bar & Grille is a hopping place to eat, drink and listen to Contemporary Hawaiian and Reggae music from 6:00 – 9:00pm every Friday night. They also have flat screen tvs that air surfing videos, sporting events and best of all, they carry the NFL ticket. Bouchon’s is a relaxed and spacious second story, open-air restaurant with breathtaking views of Hanalei’s mountains and waterfalls. Visitors and locals frequent this spot regularly, locate at 5-5190 Kuhio Highway in the Ching Young Shopping Center. Bouchon’s is open Monday through Sunday from 11:00am – 9:00pm serving up “premiere sushi” in Hanalei. Hanalei Gourmet resides in an old Hanalei school house that is both charming and also home to some quaint local shops. They’re located at 5-5161 Kuhio Highway and serve up decidedly non-gourmet, just good food and live, local entertainment Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights until 10:30pm. The Gourmet is extremely popular with locals and visitors alike…”reasonably priced for really good food”, incredibly good food, quick and friendly atmosphere”. Tahiti Nui, or as the locals call it, the Nui is a classic, ultra casual polynesian style bar and restaurant in the heart of Hanalei. They have welcomed visitors as “hanai” which means adopted family, for 3 generations. You’ll find them at 5-5515 Kuhio Highway, and they’re open Monday through Sunday from 11:00am – 12midnight, so you can enjoy live Hawaiian music from 6:30 – 9:00pm and Hawaiian slack key guitar on Friday’s starting at 4:30pm. They’re know for tasty pizza, flavorful food and world renown Mai Tai’s. Cuisines offered are: American, Polynesian and Hawaiian. Also check out: Tahiti Nui Lu’au that has hundreds of visitors each year. Aunty Louise started this back in the day to entertain her friends and it’s the same feeling of family today that comes alive every Wednesday, complete with authentic Hawaiian food, songs and dance. Doors open at 5:30pm and the Concert is from 6:30 – 8:00pm. The 2nd show, the doors open at 8:30pm and the Concert is from 9:00 – 10:30pm. $$
