Wai’oli Hui’ia Church was originally built by American Christian missionaries William and Mary Alexander with the help of others in 1841. It was established with the purpose to teach Hawaiians how to read the bible and learn about Christianity. It has been recorded nationally as a historic building and place to worship. The church started with a humble beginning, so humbling that the plaster building was made from actual coral from the beach in front of the church building. The beach area is five minutes away and in walking distance from the church. You could go swimming, get saved and attend Sunday service all in one day.
To get to the beautiful Waioli Hui’ia Church, drive north on Kuhio Highway and enter Hanalei town. Keep driving past the shops until you reach the soccer field on your left. You can’t miss it, because the church’s green building and stained window panels will be calling your soul to stop your car and check it out. There is nothing like this church on Kauai, and it defiantly stands out in the heart of Hanalei.
