IF you are feeling adventurous, why not explore the world-famous Na Pali Coast? Just 11 miles to the west, this rugged series of sweeping sea cliffs and razor sharp valleys looks like it would be more at home on another planet. If relaxation is what you crave, there is no shortage of fantastic beaches around your Hanalei Bay resort vacation rental. Closest to home are the protected waters of Hanalei Bay, a family friendly beach that boasts excellent swimming for all ages, plenty of sand to sun yourself on (and make sand castles out of), and shade trees for those who don’t like it too toasty. Stick around for sunset and watch from the iconic Hanalei Pier as the fiery sun bids the day farewell, slipping past the mountains and into the Pacific Ocean.
Other excellent beaches in the area: Anini (also protected and great for swimming), Lumahai (west of Hanalei), Makua Beach (excellent snorkeling in the summer), and the Secret Beach at Kauapea. Wait, forget we mentioned that last one…it’s a secret!
Farther afield, south Kaua‘i has plenty to offer as well. The beautiful crescent beaches of Poipu are routinely voted among the world’s best, and the vast sand dunes of Barking Sands and Polihale State Park on the southwestern shore are always drenched with sun. If you ever grow tired of the beach, a visit to Waimea Canyon is a must. This natural fissure was formed over the millennia by runoff from Mt. Wai`ale`ale, the wettest (or second wettest, depending on who and when you ask) place on earth. Spanning some 12 miles and dropping over 3,000 feet in places, the walls of the canyon are lustrous shades of reds and greens. Visitors can head to two overlooks to take in the panoramic views, or strap on their hiking boots and trek down the canyon’s walls to the floor below on a series of well-maintained trails.
